1950 Browns Champions Pennant

Cleveland Browns 1950 Season

  • Browns join the NFL
  • Marion Motley leads the NFL in rushing with 810 yards
  • Marion Motley sets the Browns NFL team rushing record with 810 yards
  • Lou Groza leads the NFL with 13 field goals
  • NFL schedules the defending 1949 NFL champion Philadelphia Eagles against the Browns in their first game in the NFL. The Browns win at Philadelphia 35-10. Eagles coach Buck Shaw complains that Paul Brown used a finesse passing game to beat the Eagles but couldn't win using a power running game. In the second meeting of the Browns and Eagles in 1950 Paul Brown does not allow Otto Graham to throw one pass during the entire game. The Browns win 13-7
  • The Los Angeles Rams come to Cleveland on Christmas Eve 1950 for the NFL Championship game. 27 seconds into the game Rams quarterback Bob Waterfield hits Glenn Davis (who starred with Doc Blanchard at Army in the 1940s) with an 82 yard touchdown pass. The game goes back and forth with the Rams Dick Hoerner rushing for two touchdowns and Larry Brink returning a fumble for a touchdown. Otto Graham threw touchdown passes to Dub Jones, Dante Lavelli, and Rex Bumgardner. Graham's TD pass to Bumgardner occurs in the 4th quarter and brings the Browns to within one point of the Rams 28-27 with time running out. With 1:48 remaining the Browns get the ball one last time and drive down to the Rams 11 yard line. With 28 seconds to go in the game the Browns line up for a 16 yard field goal attempt. Center Frank Gatski snaps the ball to holder Tommy James and Lou Groza kicks it through the uprights and the upstart Browns are the 1950 NFL Champions
