  • After the 1995 season and 49 years in Cleveland, Browns owner Art Modell ignobly moves the Browns to Baltimore where they become the Baltimore Ravens for the 1996 season
  • The city of Cleveland and Browns fans are furious with Modell for this betrayal which leads to lawsuits against Modell, his corporation, and the Browns. The NFL acts as mediators and the city of Cleveland will be given a new team for the 1999 season and a loan for a new stadium. The new Browns franchise will own the rights to the Browns team colors and history
  • MBNA Credit Card mogul Al Lerner who owned 5% of the Cleveland Browns becomes sole owner of the Browns in 1998 paying a record 530 million dollars for the franchise
  • The 1996 Topps football cards shows the Browns players in their orange and brown uniforms but has the team name Baltimore Ravens on it. Therefore I only put the other card companies' 1996 cards which still say Cleveland Browns on the card and have the 1995 Browns statistics on the back of the card on this page
