- In the 2010 NFL draft in April the Browns pick cornerback Joe Haden from Florida, safety T.J. Ward from Oregon, running back Montario Hardesty from Tennessee, and with their 3rd round pick and the 85th pick overall they take from the University of Texas the winningest quarterback in college football history Colt McCoy (45-8-0) followed by University of Georgia's David Greene (42-10-0) and University of Tennessee's Peyton Manning (39-6-0)
- Browns 2nd round draft pick running back Montario Hardesty suffers a season-ending knee injury in preseason
- The Browns are competitive in 14 of their 16 games including beating the defending Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints 30-17 at New Orleans. They also hand Tom Brady and the New England Patriots one of their two losses beating them 34-14 in Cleveland
- On October 13, 2010 the Browns trade their record-setting running back Jerome Harrison to the Eagles for running back Mike Bell
- Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace are supposed to mentor rookie Colt McCoy and get him prepared to play in the 2011 season. However, injuries to both Delhomme and Wallace force McCoy to start his first game as an NFL quarterback in Pittsburgh against the Steelers. McCoy has an impressive debut against the Steelers solid defense completing 23 passes in 33 attempts for 281 yards, 1 touchdown, and 2 interceptions. In the very next game, McCoy, the Browns defense (David Bowens intercepts Drew Brees twice and returns them for touchdowns), special teams (including a 68 yard jog by punter Reggie Hodges on a fake punt), and the lack of any offensive mistakes lead to a decisive victory over the defending Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints in the Superdome. McCoy shows promise throughout the rest of the season
- Reggie Hodges' 68 yard run on a fake punt in the Saints game is the longest run by a punter in NFL history
- On October 17, 2010 in a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers Phil Dawson makes his 235th field goal breaking Lou Groza's team record of 234 field goals made
- Joe Haden becomes the first Browns rookie to intercept passes in four consecutive games breaking Bernie Parrish's team record of 3 consecutive games in 1959. His interceptions come against Jets QB Mark Sanchez, Jaguars QB David Garrard, Panthers QB Jimmy Clausen, and Dolphins QB Chad Henne. He ends the season with a team-leading 6 interceptions
- On November 28, 2010 in a game against the Carolina Panthers Peyton Hillis rushes for three touchdowns in a 24-23 Browns victory. Hillis joins Jim Brown and Leroy Kelly as the only Browns to rush for 11 touchdowns or more in a season. When told this Hillis responded, "That's absurd. That's just absurd. Those guys are legends and I'm nobody. So there's no need to talk about that anymore."
- Through 16 weeks of the 2010 season the Browns are the only NFL team not to allow 30 points to be scored against them. In Week 17 the Pittsburgh Steelers score 31 points in the first half at Cleveland
- Peyton Hillis rushes for 1,177 yards. In the third game of the season Hillis rushes for 144 yards against the vaunted Baltimore Ravens defense. Afterwards, Ray Lewis and others said they had never heard of Hillis before this game. In Week 9 Hillis rushes for 184 yards against the New England Patriots and was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week. Hillis suffered some injuries during the season because other teams could focus on him since the Browns didn't have any other playmaker receivers or backs. He got quite a bit of national attention because of his ability to punish defenders by hitting them head-on. One sports personality said that his nickname should be "Avalanche" because "he's white, he runs downhill, and he can't be stopped"
- At the end of the 2009 season the Browns won four straight games. At the end of the 2010 season the Browns lose four straight games.
- On January 3, 2011 the Browns fire head coach Eric Mangini
- On January 13, 2011 the Browns hire St. Louis Rams offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur as their fifth head coach since they came back to the NFL in 1999. On January 21 the Browns hire former Bills and Bears head coach and current Eagles assistant defensive backs coach Dick Jauron as their defensive coordinator
